Sports Mad Melbourne!

Melbournians are sports mad, (like most Australians) and will proudly tell you that Melbourne is the sporting capital of the world!

Melbourne hosts many of the world’s greatest international sporting events, like the Australian Open - Tennis, at Rod Laver Arena, The F1 Grand Prix at Albert Park, the Wold Motor Cycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island, and of course the Melbourne Cup, a horse race first held in 1861 that is one of the oldest, and richest handicapped horse race in the world. (held every year at Flemington Racecourse). Melbourne is also renowned for having some of the finest Golf Courses in the world, particularly it's famous sandbelt courses which include Huntingdale, Metropolitan and Royal Melbourne.

But Tennis, cars, motorbikes, golf and horse races are just the beginning of Melbourne’s sporting riches. Melbourne is the birthplace of Australia’s own brand of Football, Australian Rules Football (AFL), called  "Aussie Rules" by the locals. Aussie Rules is the most popular sporting code in Australia, and Melbournians are crazy about it, and they have two world class stadiums in Melbourne where AFL is played, The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and Docklands Stadium, a purpose-built stadium owned by the AFL, which is situated in the Docklands area in the CBD where the Yarra meets Port Phillip Bay. Both grounds are a short walk from the Melbourne CBD and easily accessed by Melbourne’s great public transport system, which is based around trains, trams and busses.

But AFL is just the beginning of professional sporting entertainment in Melbourne. Melbourne also boasts professional teams in Rugby League (The Melbourne Storm), Rugby Union (The Melbourne Rebels), Basketball (The Melbourne Tigers), netball (The Melbourne Vixens and the Collingwood Magpies), cricket (The Stars and the Renegades) and traditional football (which Australians call soccer) Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City.

To allow all of these teams to compete in National sporting competitions and to host the array of international events Melbourne hosts, Melbourne boasts a huge array of world class sporting facilities including the MCG (built for the 1956 Olympic Games, it seats approximately 100,000 fans), Rod Laver Arena (Home of the Australian Tennis Open), The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, Docklands Stadium, Hisense Arena, The State Netball and Hockey Centre, Flemington Racecourse (the venue for The Melbourne Cup), world class golf courses like Huntingdale and Royal Melbourne, plus the Albert Park Grand Prix circuit.
